Six cats feared dead after animal sanctuary invaded by a pack of hunting hounds REPORTED BY LEAGUE AGAINST CRUEL SPORTS

It is feared that six cats may have been killed after a pack of hunting hounds caused havoc this week after chasing a fox and a deer through an animal sanctuary near Hastings.

The hounds rampaged through the Celia Hammond Animal Trust sanctuary in Brede for an hour and a half, terrifying the 130 cats which are resident there and resulting in over 60 of them going missing. A week after this horrific incident, 6 of them have not returned home and it is feared many have been killed â€" a lot of the cats that have gone missing were frail and elderly. It is not known what happened to the fox and deer being chased by the pack of hounds across the sanctuary.

Staff and volunteers at the sanctuary did everything they could to help protect the terrified cats which live on what is normally a safe haven for them over 100 acres of woodland and fields. They worked through the last two nights to find and help the distressed cats but were hampered by torrential rain. They now fear many have been literally torn to pieces by the hounds.

Most of the cats are very nervous and have proved difficult to find homes for, so the sanctuary normally enables them to live a safe and peaceful existence.

Staff and volunteers reported that the hounds were completely out of control and the police were called to help round them up. It appears that the East Sussex and Romney Marsh hunt is the hunt responsible for the incident and sanctuary staff alleged that they were hunting illegally.

A hunting ban was introduced across England and Wales in 2005 but the League Against Cruel Sports receives evidence from its monitors and concerned members of the public on an almost daily basis of hunts continuing to chase and kill British wildlife. Thousands of foxes, hares and deer are believed to be killed every year.

Celia Hammond, who founded the Celia Hammond Animal Trust, said: “Staff have been out looking for the cats for the last two nights but we fear up to ten may have been killed. “A few more might trickle back to our sanctuary but a lot of the missing cats were old and frail.â€

Chris Luffingham, director of policy, communications and campaigns at the League Against Cruel Sports, said: “This was a terrible incident and we can but hope that the cats all return safely. People everywhere would be horrified if they knew the extent to which the hunts are flouting the hunting ban and the people breaking the law need to be caught and prosecuted by the police.

“We need to strengthen the hunting act to ensure that the reckless behaviour exhibited by the hunt is considered an offence and custodial sentences are introduced to deter terrible incidents such as this taking place.â€

i have to agree with the fugitives views on this . hunting is barbaric and its in no way a sport . a fox or a badger cant defend its self against large numbers of hounds that pounce on it . i personally have never witnessed a hunt such as fug mentions here , i know or knew people that hunt but have never luckily witnessed anyone actually hunting or their dogs killing a fox etc . lucky for them that is , as id probably give the give the guy what for and then some . i once spoke with a guy who really annoyed me by trying to argue A / that it was a sport and B/ that the fox had a great sporting chance . to put it mildly i was p-ssed and i fooked him out of it saying how the fook can 6 or 8 dogs tearing one poor fox to shreds be or a sport or be giving then a sporting chance ? .

i know fug has lovely areas where he said he and betty enjoy lovely walks and the wildlife there , or atleast they used to , fug has said the things he has seen there (animal cruelty ) upsets hm as it would also upset me . i enjoy walks also here all be it the areas i walk in are not as wildlife filled as where fug lives . but i often walk along with my dog through nearby fields and as you do there are rabbits running around , magpies and other birds are there around the walkway and some times i see a lovely red fox that must live there . now whats better ? a lovely stroll and seeing all this lovely wildlife ? or hunting these poor creatures and killing them just for the hell of it ? . i know which i prefer .

i know animals kill other animals , thats nature , its how nature works . but humans have no need to do that . as fug has said many times , we dont own this world or the creatures in it , we merely share the world with them , and they were on this world before us and they may still be here when we (humans) have wiped each other out .all forms of hunting and animal cruelty should be stopped . what annoys me a lot is zoos killing animals for no reason other than THEY HAVE TOO MANY . and rich fooking tw-ts paying money to be able to shoot animals such as lions or whatever . it all needs to be stopped and if anyone is caught breaking these laws give them hefty prison terms . or failing that lol lock them in a room for half an hour with animal lovers like me and fug lol .
let justice be done tho the heavens fall

The rich have no value on life itself its that simple if a hound breaks a leg while running its shot its not taking to a vet if a horse cuts itself badly on barbed wire they stitch it themselves they wont go to vets and have it done properly
I have faced many hunters face on i once caught 2 guys in there twenties with terriers and ferrets trying to put the ferrets down rabbit holes it is a area i like to watch young rabbits in the spring they claimed they did it because there father used to do it --so my father was in the RAF does that mean i have to be in the RAF stupid reasons i moved them on MY WAY lol
A lady i once spoke to witnessed from her garden which backs onto fields 12 dogs tearing at a deer so she phoned the police by the time the police arrived there was nothing left other than blood it had been torn apart and the dogs took the carcus
At the top of my estate there is a country path and this path crosses a major dual carriageway so there is a bridge used by walkers and the odd vehicle -4 years ago it was reported that 12 deer skulls had been found under the bridge these are deer that i used to see in the fields behind my estate now i rarely see any
Man is the only animal capable of mass destruction and he is the only animal that will kill for the sake of killing PLEASE NEVER ENCOURAGE HUNTING
